Despite chilly winter weather, third graders at our school found the perfect way to stay warm—by combining math, movement, and teamwork in an exciting game of Trashketball. The activity transformed a regular classroom lesson into a lively competition where students used their knowledge of area to solve problems before earning a chance to shoot baskets into classroom bins.
In teams, students worked through a series of math challenges focused on calculating the area of various shapes. Each correct answer earned their group a turn at shooting for points, encouraging not only precision in problem‑solving but also collaboration and communication. Laughter, strategy, and school spirit filled the room as students cheered on their teammates and celebrated each successful shot.
Teachers noted that Trashketball is more than just a fun diversion from the cold weather—it’s a way to make learning active and memorable. By blending curriculum content with physical activity, students stay engaged while reinforcing important math skills in a hands‑on way.
The friendly competition brought out the best in the third graders, who demonstrated strong teamwork, perseverance, and sportsmanship throughout the game. As winter continues, activities like these are keeping classrooms warm with energy, excitement, and lots of learning.
